Getting Back to the Root

Sitting in an old Baptist church, listening to the preacher, my mind began wandering around the room. I noticed the lack of technology in that church. There was no big screen with amazing graphics. There was no drum set or even a bass guitar. No fancy lights or movie theater-style seating.

However, sitting in that place, I realized the simplicity of the Gospel. I remembered back to when I first fell in love with Jesus. There was no band, no choir—just me and Him in that small dorm room when I was 19 years old.

Two years later, I felt so lost and heartbroken, and God led me to an old church where there were no fancy lights and no big screens. Just a pulpit and some pews. That was where I sought Him and found Him.

Now, at 30 years old, I smile when I find myself in an old church. It reminds me of my roots. It reminds me of when I first fell in love with Jesus. It reminds me of where I came from, and most of all, it reminds me of where I am going.

As I sat in that old Baptist church, looking at all it was lacking, I quickly wondered, “Why did God bring me back to a place like this?” It was truly for the simple Gospel.

The preacher didn't speak for more than 35 minutes. The choir sang a few songs, and the service was over. But I had to be reminded that no matter how far I go in life, God sends me back to my roots. No matter how big the ministry grows, God brings me back to the simplicity of the Gospel.

It showed me that my office space didn’t need the new lights I was waiting to buy or a new creative introduction video. As long as I showed up week after week with the simple Gospel, God would continue to show up in the ministry.

I share this with you: don't get upset about the places God has sent you back to. Don’t get discouraged when you feel like you're not doing it as big as you desire. Don’t throw in the towel when it isn’t growing like someone else’s. Don’t forget the root of why you do what you do. Don’t forget the root of why you fell in love with Jesus.
