Getting Back to the Basics!

It's easy to get caught up in daily life and allow God to become a part-time relationship while still expecting full-time benefits.

I love God, but there have been times when I haven't been the faithful servant He has called me to be. Days and weeks would go by, and I would treat God like a distant cousin that you only talk to occasionally. I knew my faith had shifted. I was no longer actively seeking God—I was simply getting through life.

I stopped asking Him for direction and guidance in my decisions and future endeavors. Slowly but surely, I was becoming lukewarm. I knew it when prayer became the last thing I wanted to do and reading my Bible barely crossed my mind.

Getting back to the basics means returning to the days when you were a baby in your faith. The days when you hungered for the Word of God and biblical teaching. The days when you weren't so critical of yourself or others, but instead were like a sponge, soaking up every blessing and piece of spiritual wisdom God wanted to give you.

Going back to the basics is crucial if you want to grow closer to God. It's about allowing His light to shine through you again and no longer denying Him through disobedience or neglect.

Prayer: Prayer Brings Peace

Above everything else, pray.

Prayer is essential, but let's be honest—it can easily slip away from us. Days can go by without any intimate time spent with God. That's why it's important to intentionally set aside time to pray and connect with Him.

Prayer is simply a conversation between you and God.

Many people go through life without being honest with God about their fears, doubts, frustrations, and needs. Yet Scripture reminds us that sometimes we have not because we ask not.

Prayer is one of the most important tools for getting back to the basics.

(James 4:2-3)

Bible Reading: Bible Reading Brings Direction

This may be the one many people struggle with, but it goes hand in hand with prayer.

There have been many seasons in my life when I lost the desire to read God's Word. During those times, I would pray and ask God to give me a hunger for Scripture. Before long, I would find myself making time to read again.

Bible reading isn't complicated.

Pray for direction, hunger, and revelation.

Then find time in your morning or evening to sit down and study God's Word.

The more you read it, the more it will begin to transform your life.

(Romans 10:17)

Worship: Worship Delivers and Ignites

This is one of my favorite ways to connect with God.

I love all types of Christian music, from contemporary Christian music to gospel.

Worship lifts your spirit and creates an atmosphere of gratitude and humility before God. Worship can bring healing in times of hurt. Worship can break heaviness and depression. Worship reminds us of God's goodness, even in difficult seasons.

And sometimes worship comes with tears.

But no tear shed before God is wasted.

Even when it hurts, worship is still powerful.

(Psalm 104:33)

Meditation: Meditation Brings Clarity

Meditating on God's Word day and night helps build your faith.

Whether it's reflecting on your favorite Scriptures, listening to sermons, or reading devotionals throughout the day, keeping God's Word before you allows it to become written on your heart.

Spending quiet time with God can also bring peace and clarity while you wait for His direction.

Listening prayerfully for God's voice is a form of meditation as well.

(Philippians 4:8)

Journaling: Journaling Brings Out the Truth

This is often where some of the greatest revelations happen.

Many of my personal breakthroughs have come from writing down my deepest thoughts, prayers, and desires in a journal.

Journaling helps you recognize God's goodness and remember what He has spoken to you over time.

As seasons change, your journal becomes a record of God's faithfulness. It allows you to revisit lessons you've learned and transform knowledge about God into wisdom from God.

Write it down.

Don't let what God reveals to you be forgotten.

(Habakkuk 2:2)

Sometimes getting back to the basics is exactly what we need. Not another conference. Not another book. Not another strategy.

Just prayer.

Just the Word.

Just worship.

Just time with God.

And when we return to the basics, we often find that God has been waiting for us there all along.

Weekly Scripture

Then the Lord said to me, 'Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others.

Habakkuk 2:2
